Welcome to the YRS Conference of the Americas 2015 |
We all traveled to the Cheakamus River to start this beach cleanup. We split into groups with one large bucket, one garbage picker tool, a clipboard to record our findings, and some gloves. Once we got on the beach, we recorded all the garbage that we found and collected. Our group ended up with a lot of cans, cigarette butts and much more. The oddest things that were found in our group was 12 dryer sheets! That was nothing compared to the amount of debris another group found. They found a crashed RV! At the end of the trip all of us collected 350 pounds of garbage! That is amazing seeing how most of the trash was very light. We contributed to the cleanup of a river, and even if it was a small difference in the world, it can influence others to do the same in their community.

The Campfire was held as the sun had just set. We sat on benches warming our hands from the cold weather. We started by learning the campfire rules. Every time someone said the word campfire, we must stand up yelling "CAMPFIRE? WE LOVE CAMPFIRE!" then kick a leg in the air. This continued throughout the entire 'ceremonial burning of the wood.' We sang many songs which included repeat after me songs, repeat after me songs and do as I do ditties. Songs that made sense, songs that didn't, and songs that had meaning to some but not to others. This included a song in flemish which included a gnome (a lovely one from Walmart may I add) and some crazy dancing. On the night I saw the campfire, it was not raining, and we had a special guest perform. He had a flaming baton that he performed with.
It was really amazing to see how much hard work was put into the campfire we had that night. We all had so much fun joining in and laughing with our friends from around the world. We all traveled to the local river to start this beach cleanup. We split into groups with one large bucket, one garbage picker tool, a clipboard to record our findings, and some gloves. Once we got on the beach, we ticked off all the garbage that we found and collected. Our group ended up with a lot of cans, cigarette buts and much more. The oddest things that were found in our group was 12 dryer sheets! That was nothing compared to the amount of debris another group found. They found a crashed RV! At the end of the day all of us collected a total of 300 pounds of garbage! That is amazing seeing how most of the trash was very light.
